Pie for Me, Myself, and I | Snacking on Sweets

After hearing the timer ding in her small kitchen, Melitta Braunvieh was reaching into her oven after the smell of smoke made the alarm go off as she pulled the tray. Coughing, she placed the tray on the counter and opened the window to ventilate the area. Her kitchen towel was fanning the alarm to quiet it down and avoid the fire department from visiting her. How embarrassing is that her mini s’more pies don’t turn out right constantly and she was running out of chocolate chips and her milk was almost gone along with the butter.

Her disaster with trying to make chocolates didn’t work as her chocolate never tempered right and wanted to give her new neighbors, Briar, Reece, and Jasper a little something for welcoming her into their town. She sighed as she dumped the mess she had made in the trash, feeling defeated, and her ears drooped further.Melitta looked around the kitchen at the large mess she had made. Bowls with chocolate that didn’t work, batter waiting to fill the little pie pans, and dirty dishes that stacked up to the ceiling almost. She swore she used every bowl in the cabinets to make something to give.

“Fiddle ferns, this is becoming one big mess! Even with Briar showing me how to make chocolates, it’s not working for me. So I thought making my famous s’more pies, except small enough to fit in the boxes she gave me, would work… but even now I am messing that up!” She groaned as she pulled on her horns. “What am I going to do now?” Her hands slid from her horns to her face as she pondered what to do before sighing and scrapping the burnt pies into the garbage. Joining her failed baked goods in the can, she placed the spoon next to the sink.

Sighing, she started to fill the sink up with water and a squirt of dish soap. While it filled, she started her coffee machine, which sputtered as it came to life. Filter and coffee grounds in place, it brewed into the pot and she washed the dishes so she could have more room. Hopefully to clear her mind to see where she failed. Her dish sponge scrubbed the burnt chocolate in the glass bowl. Just spacing out as she looked at the window as others got their boxes and were happy.

Being new in town wasn’t fun and was shy about meeting new people due to an incident where her skirt got caught on a railing from the train, ripping it and exposing her honeycomb patterned underwear. Unknown to her until someone tapped her on the shoulder, which she realized was Jasper at the time, informed her that she was unintentionally flashing the entire town as she hauled her bag that had essentials. She swore she felt warm as a blush covered her face and moved the bag to cover the exposed area. Thanking him, Melitta quickly left him to find her new house.

Coming out of it, the dishes were done and drying, she went to check her stock to see if she had enough to make more of the mini pies… only to see maybe half of a normal pie could be made if she stretched her ingredients. Grabbing some of the clean dishware, she got to work to make her chocolate filling and got her mixing stand to blend the those together while she made her homemade marshmallow on the stove top. Quickly getting her chocolate filling she sat in the fridge while she worked on the sticky mess.

The marshmallow was a bit difficult to tame as it was sticking to everything before I remembered powdered sugar would help. Throwing it in there, it started to separate from the beaters and bowl. Letting it rest, she grabbed the smaller pie crust and pulled the chocolate filling out of the fridge to pour into the crust she had made. Taking the marshmallow next, she topped the semi- formed chocolate with the sticky mess. It shouldn't take long for it to toast the marshmallow and melt the chocolate again for the perfect gooey mess that would make her feel a bit better.

As she waited for the timer to sound off, the thought of maybe Bovine Bluffs may not be the right fit for her. Once you got to know her, Melitta would be a friend for life. Maybe that is why she was taken advantage of in her last town? She didn't want to cause trouble or be a problem to anyone because she didn't have a backbone. Hearing the timer go off, she put her oven mitt on to see that the pie came out perfect this time as she sat it on the stove to cool.

Wanting to harden a little before digging into the warm mess that would happen, she got the last of milk in a glass to have with her pie. Melitta shut the window close to avoid hearing anymore love struck moos while she dug into her pie. Feeling a bit mournful she couldn't share it with anyone. “Happy Spring's Eve.” Toasting her fork at the empty seat across from her as she had placed the pie and her glass at the table. The house is quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator running and one or two drops of water dripping in the sink.

It was a rather peaceful and lonely night in the Braunvieh house.

Not the best of bakers, Melitta spends her entire evening trying to make something, but fails.
